Paul Miller Seeks College Trustee Position
By Dean Gray, September 2, 2008
Paul Miller is running for election as Trustee for the College of the Desert (COD).
His goal is to best represent the community that lost the western campus to Palm
Springs.
Miller, the minister of the Christ Lutheran Church, also serves as chaplain for the
Desert Hot Springs Police Department and represents a substantial change
compared to the incumbent of the district. Chuck Hayden of Desert Hot Springs is
running for re-election based on a record of voting against the investment by the
COD in this city, preferring Palm Springs instead.
Miller, a well-respected community leader breathes fresh air into the election for
Area 2, bringing considerable experience to the position. Miller participated in the
Mayor's Blue Ribbon Community leading to the formation of the current Police
Department.
Miller is a strong supporter of the public safety and nursing programs at the
college. “It's important to train students for vital jobs,” Miller stated.
“Focus on local youth is my top priority,” said Miller. Miller started many youth
programs in and out of the church.
“Building bridges between the college and the high school is important. It's more
than just having basic skills to do a job. We need to do a better job to connect to
our students and to encourage people of all ages to get advanced education. The
school needs to be available to students, for one class, for one semester, or for a
degree,” Miller said.
Miller started off as a truck driver returning to school to become a pastor, later
serving as Student Body President both in community college and in graduate
school.
As a resident of the West Valley for 13 years with experience as a family
counselor, law enforcement volunteer and community leadership, Miller
possesses valuable qualities needed to serve as a COD Trustee. His
enthusiasm is obvious as Miller is working hard to win the election to this highly
respected and important position.
