More Strategies For Living Longer, Feeling Younger & Being Healthy

This week I conclude my review of a small but valuable (and free) 15-page eBook titled “10 Strategies To Live Longer, Feel Younger And Have Optimal Health.” This book was written by Dr. Terry Grossman, M.D., a medical doctor who heads the Grossman Wellness Center located on the west side of Denver, Colorado.

As you will read further here, “10 Strategies” is actually an introduction to the procedures for life extension specifically taught and emphasized at the Grossman Wellness Center. However, the information in this little book can be of great value to anyone.

“10 Strategies” is available for free download by going to the Wellness Center online at www.grossmanwellness.com. If you are a senior who doesn’t have access to a computer, I suggest you go to the nearest public library or contact a computer-literate friend to accomplish the free download.

Last week I summarized the first three strategies proposed in this book to live longer. The first is based on studies of people living in those four areas of our planet where people tend to live longer than average. This first strategy is to have close social relationships with family, friends and community.

Dr. Grossman’s second strategy for longevity involves lifting weights or engaging in strength training as a means of increasing the levels of hormones associated with youthfulness, such as testosterone, DHEA and human growth hormone. An interesting and, I suspect, little known approach to changing the chemistry of one’s body without ingesting pharmaceuticals.

The third strategy for longevity is a special kind of aerobic exercise called variable interval training. As “10 Strategies” explains in some detail, this interval training involves short bursts of exertion followed by periods of rest, steadily increasing the intensity and varying the duration of each interval. This results in strengthening the heart, increased lung capacity and decreased body fat.

The fourth strategy is to become consciously aware of not stuffing your stomach at each meal. This method of modified caloric restriction is part of Japanese culture, and the Japanese enjoy among the greatest longevity of any nation on earth. However, most people do not relish the thought of drastically cutting calories or experiencing hunger on a regular basis so “10 Strategies” advocates taking supplements such as Resveratrol, the ingredient in red wine that reduces feelings of hunger.

The fifth strategy for longevity is to control psychological stress with the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) of tapping the body at certain points to remove energy blocks. “10 Strategies” presents an interesting summary of this simple but valuable procedure. I also teach this at my Thursday classes in Joshua Tree, (See below).

The sixth through ninth strategies involve knowing what medical tests your doctor can possibly perform to maintain your health. These technical sections of “10 Strategies” tell you what you should know to intelligently discuss possible tests and treatments with your doctor.

The sixth strategy is to avoid heart attacks by having your doctor measure your coronary artery calcium score.

The seventh strategy is to use ultra sound and diagnostic thermography for early detection of cancer.

The eighth strategy is to get a SPECT scan of your brain to avoid Alzheimer’s disease. SPECT imaging can reveal changes in the brain years before the onset of any symptoms.

The ninth strategy is to measure your Vitamin D level. Among other benefits, Vitamin D decreases fracture risk, reduces blood sugar in diabetics, lowers blood pressure and prevents multiple sclerosis. In the opinion of Dr. Grossman, the doses and recommendations for supplemental Vitamin D given by public health authorities are too low for optimal health. Therefore, vitamin D is the one vitamin that you want to measure with a blood test.

A tenth unusual strategy for health and longevity advocated by Dr. Grossman is to save your frozen stem cells in cryonic storage. While scientists were frustrated for many years because of the federally mandated ban in the United States on most types of embryonic stem cell research due to ethical considerations in using embryos, it now appears that this may have been a blessing in disguise. Being unable to obtain federal research money for embryonic stem cell research, scientists turned their attention to types of stem cells that did not involve embryos. By using one’s own adult stem cells to repair your body, there is no chance of rejection. Dr. Grossman reports that there are hundreds of experiments presently underway to harvest and store frozen stem cells in cryonics storage so that they will be available in their most youthful stage for future use in repairing bodies.

These last strategies are too technical to adequately summarize them so I just mention them here and refer you to the little 15-page book, “10 Strategies,” for more detailed information.
